Preparing Your Heating System for North Georgia Winters
January 15, 2026 • 5 min read
Living in the North Georgia mountains, we get the best of both worlds—beautiful fall foliage and winters that are cold enough to need heat but mild enough to enjoy. That said, when temperatures drop into the 20s and 30s (and occasionally lower), you want your heating system ready to go. Here's your complete pre-winter checklist.
Why Fall Maintenance Matters
Your heating system has been sitting idle for months. Before you flip that switch and expect warm air, a little preparation goes a long way. Fall maintenance helps you:
- Catch small problems before they become expensive emergencies
- Ensure safe operation (especially important for gas furnaces)
- Maximize efficiency and keep energy bills in check
- Extend the life of your equipment
- Avoid being stuck without heat on the coldest night of the year
Your Pre-Winter Heating Checklist
1. Replace Your Air Filter
We talk about this a lot because it's that important. A clean filter ensures proper airflow, which is essential for efficient heating. If you haven't changed your filter since summer, now's the time. For most homes, a fresh filter at the start of heating season, with a check every 30 days, keeps things running smoothly.
2. Test Your System Before You Need It
Don't wait for the first cold snap to turn on your heat. On a mild fall day, switch your thermostat to heat mode and set it a few degrees above room temperature. Let the system run for 10-15 minutes and check for:
- Warm air coming from the vents
- Any unusual smells (a slight dusty smell at first is normal)
- Strange noises like banging, squealing, or grinding
- The system cycling on and off normally
3. Check Your Thermostat
Make sure your thermostat is working correctly. If you have a programmable or smart thermostat, update your heating schedule for winter. Consider setting it back 7-10 degrees while you're away or sleeping—the Department of Energy says this can save you up to 10% on heating costs annually.
If you're still using an old manual thermostat, consider upgrading. A programmable thermostat typically pays for itself within a year through energy savings.
4. Inspect Vents and Registers
Walk through your home and check all supply and return vents:
- Make sure they're open and unobstructed
- Move furniture, rugs, or curtains that might be blocking airflow
- Vacuum dust and debris from vent covers
- Check that dampers (if you have them) are in the correct position
5. Clear the Area Around Your Furnace
Your furnace needs breathing room. Remove any boxes, cleaning supplies, paint cans, or other items stored near the unit. Keep at least 3 feet of clearance on all sides. This is especially important for gas furnaces—flammable materials near the unit are a safety hazard.
6. Check Carbon Monoxide Detectors
If you have a gas furnace, working carbon monoxide detectors are essential. Test each detector and replace batteries if needed. CO detectors should be replaced every 5-7 years. If you don't have CO detectors, install them—one on each level of your home and near sleeping areas.
⚠️ Carbon Monoxide Safety
Carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless. Symptoms of CO exposure include headaches, dizziness, nausea, and confusion. If your CO detector goes off, evacuate immediately and call 911. Never ignore a CO alarm.
7. Inspect Your Outdoor Unit (Heat Pumps)
If you have a heat pump, the outdoor unit works year-round. Before winter:
- Clear leaves, debris, and vegetation from around the unit
- Trim back shrubs to maintain at least 2 feet of clearance
- Check that the unit is level
- Look for any visible damage or wear
8. Schedule Professional Maintenance
While there's a lot you can do yourself, an annual professional tune-up is the best way to ensure your system is ready for winter. A trained technician will:
- Inspect and clean the burner assembly (gas furnaces)
- Check the heat exchanger for cracks (critical for safety)
- Test ignition and safety controls
- Lubricate moving parts
- Check electrical connections
- Measure airflow and adjust as needed
- Test system efficiency
- Identify potential problems before they cause breakdowns
Signs Your Heating System Needs Attention
During your pre-winter check, watch for these warning signs:
- Yellow burner flame – A healthy gas furnace flame should be blue. Yellow indicates incomplete combustion.
- Unusual noises – Banging, popping, squealing, or grinding sounds need professional attention.
- Frequent cycling – If your system turns on and off constantly, something's wrong.
- Uneven heating – Some rooms too hot while others stay cold? Could be ductwork issues or a failing system.
- Rising energy bills – If your bills are climbing without increased usage, your system may be losing efficiency.
- Age – Most furnaces last 15-20 years. If yours is approaching that age, start planning for replacement.
